Air Canada LaGuardia Crash: Two Pilots Killed, Dozens Injured as Jet Strikes Fire Truck

National Desk • March 23, 2026

Two pilots were killed and dozens of passengers and crew were sent to hospital when an Air Canada Express regional jet struck a fire truck on the runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Sunday night. The aircraft, which had departed Montreal’s Trudeau International Airport, was travelling at approximately 130 miles per hour on landing when it collided with a Port Authority aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle, crushing the nose of the plane and knocking the truck on its side. Thirty-nine passengers and crew were taken to area hospitals, some with serious injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at LaGuardia shortly after the collision. The airport was expected to remain closed until the afternoon of March 24. Audio from air traffic control heard before the collision included voices instructing a vehicle to “stop” multiple times before the impact. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada and the US National Transportation Safety Board have both launched investigations.

Ford Seizes Billy Bishop Airport from Toronto; Declares It Province’s First Special Economic Zone

National Desk • March 23, 2026

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Monday that the province will expropriate the City of Toronto’s share of Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport and designate it a special economic zone, enabling the province to suspend provincial and municipal laws to fast-track a runway expansion that would allow jets at the downtown waterfront facility. Ford announced the move at a press conference at the airport, saying the government would introduce legislation during the spring sitting that began Monday after a 14-week break. The city owns roughly 20 per cent of the airport’s land.

Mayor Olivia Chow condemned the move as “unilateral action to grab city land without consulting Torontonians.” The federal Transportation Minister said Ottawa would work with the province to design a path forward but stopped short of an explicit endorsement. Environmental Defence warned the plan would strip residents of environmental protections at the waterfront.

MPs Return to House of Commons as Carney, Poilievre Back from Overseas Travel

National Desk • March 23, 2026

Members of Parliament resumed sitting in Ottawa on Monday after a two-week break, with the government facing pointed questions about new Auditor General reports. Prime Minister Mark Carney returned from a European trip that included official visits to Norway and the United Kingdom, while Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre returned from the United States, having made stops in Detroit, Texas, and New York. Three federal by-elections in Scarborough Southwest, University–Rosedale, and Terrebonne are scheduled for April 13, results that could determine whether the Liberals achieve a majority in the House of Commons.

Floor-crossing rumours continued to circulate following Nunavut MP Lori Idlout’s defection from the NDP to the Liberals earlier in March — the fourth MP to make the switch in four months. The NDP, without a permanent leader ahead of its March 27–29 leadership vote, remains at historically low polling numbers.

Carney and Poilievre Find Unlikely Common Ground as Both Leaders Travel Abroad

National Desk • March 21, 2026

Despite their rivalry in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre have shown signs of a working relationship during their recent separate overseas trips. Poilievre told American podcaster Joe Rogan that the two leaders exchange text messages regularly when abroad: “I won’t criticize him on foreign soil. We have a mutual respect.” He described a moment of shared humanity following the Tumbler Ridge shooting in February, during which the two men stood side by side and joined hands at a memorial for the victims.

The warmer tone contrasts sharply with years of hostile parliamentary exchanges. Analysts say the shift reflects both leaders’ recognition that Canada’s trade relationship with the United States requires a united national front, particularly amid the ongoing Iran war’s effects on global energy markets.

Conservative Campaign Manager Dismisses Double-Digit Liberal Lead in Polls

National Desk • March 22, 2026

The Conservative Party’s campaign manager Steve Outhouse said on Sunday that the party remains focused on issues that matter to Canadians — primarily affordability and cost of living — despite polls showing the Liberals ahead by double digits. Outhouse acknowledged Carney had “created an environment where people are generally happy” but argued the Tories were expanding their appeal. Poilievre, meanwhile, said he was “broadening the range” of his image following his first foreign trip as Opposition leader.

His Joe Rogan interview drew significant media attention in Canada. Political scientist David Coletto noted that while Carney’s numbers are strong, Canadians’ openness to voting Conservative has not dropped, suggesting the race remains more competitive than headline polling implies.

Federal By-Elections Set for April 13; Liberals Eye Majority

National Desk • March 2026

Three federal by-elections — in Scarborough Southwest, University–Rosedale, and Terrebonne — are scheduled for April 13, with results likely to determine whether Prime Minister Carney’s Liberal government achieves a majority in the House of Commons. The Liberals currently hold 169 seats, three short of a majority, a figure bolstered by four floor-crossers from the NDP and Conservatives over the past four months. Elections Canada noted it has set up offices in participating ridings and that special ballot voting closes April 22.

The Terrebonne seat became vacant after the Supreme Court of Canada overturned the 2025 general election result in that riding in February 2026, ordering a new vote. The two other seats opened after the resignations of Chrystia Freeland and another Liberal MP earlier in the year.

TSX Rebounds 1.81% as Trump’s Iran Pause Eases Stagflation Fears

Business Desk • March 23, 2026

The S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 1.81 per cent to close at 31,884 on Monday, its best single-session gain in weeks, as news of a five-day pause in US strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure deflated the so-called “war premium” that had weighed on global markets for nearly four weeks. Financials led the recovery, with Royal Bank of Canada, TD Bank, BMO, and CIBC all gaining more than two per cent as concerns over energy-driven inflation moderated. Technology shares were also strong, with Shopify up 3.6 per cent and Celestica jumping 6.6 per cent.

However, the energy sector reversed sharply, with Canadian Natural Resources and Cenovus each declining over 1.4 per cent as crude oil prices fell more than nine per cent intraday on news of the diplomatic pause. The TSX remains down roughly six per cent over the past month, reflecting the broader damage the Iran war has inflicted on global risk assets.

Bank of Canada Traders Trim Rate-Hike Bets as Iran Pause Eases Oil Pressure

Business Desk • March 23, 2026

Interest rate futures tracking the Bank of Canada’s policy path shifted Monday, with traders paring back bets on further rate hikes after crude oil prices fell sharply following US President Trump’s five-day postponement of planned strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure. The BoC, which held its benchmark rate at 2.25 per cent at its March 18 meeting, had signalled concern that sustained energy-driven inflation could force it to tighten policy even as the trade war with the United States weighed on growth. The sudden retreat in oil prices provided the central bank some breathing room, and bond markets reacted by pushing yields slightly lower.

Economists at multiple Canadian banks cautioned that the reprieve may be temporary, noting that Iran’s state media denied any talks had taken place with Washington, introducing significant uncertainty about whether the five-day pause would lead to a durable ceasefire or renewed escalation.

Ontario Budget to Be Tabled Thursday; Ford Government Eyes Record Infrastructure Spend

Business Desk • March 23, 2026

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy is scheduled to table the province’s 2026–27 budget on Thursday, March 26, with the Ford government expected to outline major infrastructure and economic stimulus investments framed as a response to the US tariff war. The budget is anticipated to include significant capital commitments related to transit, housing, and critical minerals, alongside spending tied to the province’s new special economic zone agenda, which Premier Ford used for the first time on Monday to designate Billy Bishop Airport.

Fiscal watchdog the Financial Accountability Office has previously warned that the province’s spending trajectory may result in a larger-than-projected deficit. Bay Street analysts expect the government to project a modest deficit while building in flexibility for further stimulus if trade conditions deteriorate.

Maple Leafs Fall 5–2 to Ottawa as Auston Matthews Sidelined by Knee Surgery

Sports Desk • March 22, 2026

The Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 5–2 decision to the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday night, extending their losing streak to three games (0-2-1). The team was without captain Auston Matthews, who underwent knee surgery on Thursday. With starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz taking a puck to the throat in warmups and requiring hospital care, Joseph Woll made 38 saves in his second consecutive start but could not stem Ottawa’s attack. Tim Stutzle, Claude Giroux, Warren Foegele, Michael Amadio, and Ridly Greig all scored for the Senators, while John Tavares and Easton Cowan replied for Toronto.

The Leafs, now 29–29–13, face the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday. Ottawa coach Travis Green praised his team’s consistency: “We just stuck with it, stuck with our game, didn’t change.” The Senators moved to within three points of Detroit for the second Eastern wild card.

Stanley Cup Playoff Race Tight with Three Weeks to Go; Nine Teams Chasing Eastern Spots

Sports Desk • March 23, 2026

With approximately three weeks remaining in the 2025–26 NHL regular season, nine Eastern Conference teams are actively competing for the two wild card spots and first place in multiple divisions. The Ottawa Senators have made a late push, going 8–2–1 in their past 11 games and sitting within three points of Detroit for the second wild card. The four divisional leaders in the Eastern Conference are still unresolved entering the final stretch, setting up what could be one of the most competitive playoff run-ins in recent memory.

Among Canadian teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to struggle following Matthew’s surgery, while the Montreal Canadiens — riding a five-point performance from Cole Caufield in a 7–3 rout of the Islanders on Saturday — are pressing for a playoff berth. Caufield now has 43 goals on the season.

Blue Jays Open Home Season Friday Against Athletics; Spring Training Wraps This Week

Sports Desk • March 2026

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to open their 2026 home season at Rogers Centre on Friday, March 27, against the Oakland Athletics, with first pitch scheduled for 3:07 PM ET. The team completed its spring training program in Dunedin, Florida, with manager John Schneider sounding cautiously optimistic about his starting rotation heading into the regular season. Infielder Bo Bichette missed portions of spring with a hamstring tightness but is expected to be available for Opening Day.

The home opener arrives at a moment of heightened geopolitical anxiety, with oil prices affecting the broader economic backdrop and several international players having navigated travel disruptions related to Gulf airspace closures during spring training travel. The Jays will play 81 home games at Rogers Centre this season before a proposed renovation begins in 2027.

March 24, 1882: Robert Koch Announces Discovery of the Tuberculosis Bacterium

History Desk

On March 24, 1882, German physician Robert Koch announced to the Berlin Physiological Society that he had identified Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the causative agent of tuberculosis — then one of the world’s most deadly diseases. Koch’s discovery was a landmark moment in the history of medicine and public health, earning him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1905. In Canada, tuberculosis was particularly devastating in Indigenous communities throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The World Health Organization now marks March 24 each year as World Tuberculosis Day in Koch’s honour, using it to raise awareness about the ongoing global TB burden.

Ford’s Billy Bishop Takeover Sparks Waterfront Battle; Toronto Council to Vote on Opposition Motion

Local Desk • March 23, 2026

Toronto City Council is set to debate a motion this week urging the city to formally oppose Premier Doug Ford’s plan to seize its stake in Billy Bishop Airport, following the premier’s announcement Monday that the province would expropriate the city’s 20 per cent land ownership interest. The motion was brought forward by Councillor Ausma Malik, whose Ward 10 ward encompasses the island airport, and seconded by Mayor Olivia Chow. Malik called Ford’s move “unacceptable” and said any significant decisions about the waterfront “have to be done openly through a transparent process.”

Chow’s top concern was airport safety, noting there is a federal deadline to extend the runway to create safety zones by next summer and that no work has yet begun. She said the province’s “future plans” must not jeopardise the airport’s safe operations today.

GTA Gas Prices Rise Further as Iran War Keeps Fuel Costs Elevated

Local Desk • March 22, 2026

Gas prices across the Greater Toronto Area climbed past $1.70 per litre at most stations over the weekend, inching upward as global crude oil prices remained highly volatile amid the Iran war. The rise follows an eight-cent jump the prior weekend that briefly sent prices toward $1.75 at some premium stations in the 905 region. While crude oil prices fell sharply on Monday following Trump’s announcement of a five-day pause in strikes on Iran, analysts warned that GTA pump prices typically lag the oil market by several days, meaning further relief at the pumps may not be immediately visible.

The Iran war has driven an estimated 30 per cent increase in the price of crude oil since late February, adding roughly 30 cents per litre to pump prices across the region since the conflict began. Commuters and logistics companies have absorbed significant cost increases.

Community Mourns Leandro Santos, 13, Killed by Train in Mississauga During March Break

Local Desk • March 23, 2026

Members of the Mississauga community were rallying around the family of Leandro Santos, a 13-year-old boy who was struck and killed by a train in the city during the March Break. Community members held a vigil over the weekend and created a fundraiser to support Santos’s grieving mother. The tragedy drew attention to concerns about youth access to railway corridors in residential areas of the city, with neighbours calling for better fencing and crossing barriers near the location of the incident.

Peel Regional Police and the Transportation Safety Board are continuing their investigation into the circumstances of the collision. Santos attended school in the Malton neighbourhood, and tributes have been left at a makeshift memorial near the site. Local councillors are expected to raise the matter of pedestrian and youth safety near rail corridors at the next council meeting.

Toronto Integrity Commissioner Finds Councillor Violated Code of Conduct

Local Desk • March 23, 2026

Toronto’s Integrity Commissioner found that a downtown Toronto city councillor violated the municipal Code of Conduct during an interaction with a constituent in 2025. While the commissioner made the finding against the councillor, no penalty was recommended, citing the circumstances of the interaction and the absence of prior complaints. The ruling was released Monday and is expected to be reviewed by city council in the coming weeks. The commissioner’s findings are binding on matters of fact but advisory on the question of sanctions, which ultimately rest with council.

Toronto’s Code of Conduct governs conduct including communications, use of power and influence, and treatment of the public and staff. The case attracted local attention as the interaction appeared in a video circulated online, prompting a formal complaint from the constituent involved.

Brampton Federal Contract: Stellantis Secures Federal Funding for Production Expansion

Local Desk • March 23, 2026

Stellantis has secured a federal government funding commitment connected to its Brampton Assembly Plant, confirming what local MPs have described as a significant investment in southwestern Ontario’s automotive future. The deal follows Stellantis’ decision earlier this year to add a third production shift at its Windsor Assembly Plant — creating approximately 1,700 jobs — and is part of the federal government’s broader strategy to anchor Canadian auto manufacturing amid the US tariff war. Brampton has been a key site in Stellantis’ Canadian operations for decades.

Federal Economic Development Minister Chrystia Freeland’s former riding of Brampton is directly affected by the investment. The deal is expected to be formally announced in the coming days, ahead of the April 13 federal by-elections. Local officials across the GTA have welcomed the investment as a sign of confidence in the region’s manufacturing base.

GTA Housing Market: Benchmark Price Falls 30% in Inflation-Adjusted Terms as Rates Bite

Business Desk • March 2026

Canada’s benchmark national home price has declined more than 30 per cent in real terms when accounting for inflation, according to analysis by The Globe and Mail, representing one of the most significant housing corrections in the country’s modern history. The GTA has been hit particularly hard, with condo prices falling in nominal terms across Brampton, Markham, and Whitby as higher borrowing costs and reduced immigration targets compress demand. The Bank of Canada’s rate hold at 2.25 per cent at its March 18 meeting offered no immediate relief to variable-rate mortgage holders.

The correction has created a bifurcated market: entry-level detached homes in outer GTA municipalities such as Whitby and Oakville are seeing cautious renewed interest from first-time buyers, while the presale condo market remains largely frozen due to high construction financing costs and softened investor appetite.

Ontario Budget Preview: Bethlenfalvy to Table 2026 Spending Plan Thursday

Business Desk • March 23, 2026

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy will table the province’s 2026 budget on Thursday, March 26, with the Ford government expected to use the document to respond to ongoing US tariff pressures and the economic fallout from the Iran war. Government insiders say the budget will outline investments in infrastructure, transit, and critical minerals, with additional detail on the government’s new Special Economic Zone framework following Monday’s Billy Bishop announcement. The province is also expected to update its fiscal projections after the global oil shock has complicated the economic outlook.

Construction industry observers and GTA developers will be watching closely for any changes to development charges, land transfer taxes, or housing supply legislation. The GTA’s new home construction sector has been struggling with delayed projects and stalled pre-sale activity, and the industry has been pressing for measures to reduce carrying costs.

Raptors’ Final Stretch: Four Home Games Ahead as Playoff Seeding Hangs in Balance

Sports Desk • March 24, 2026

With nine regular season games remaining, the Toronto Raptors face a crucial homestand run that will define their playoff positioning. After completing a five-game western road trip, Toronto returns to Scotiabank Arena on Friday, March 27, to host the New Orleans Pelicans (8:30 PM ET), followed by the Orlando Magic on Sunday, March 29. The Raptors then hit the road again before returning home for April contests against Miami Heat. Currently 39–32 and fifth in the Eastern Conference, the team is separated from sixth-place Atlanta by a single game.

Fans can also catch the Raptors on the road at the LA Clippers on Wednesday, March 25 (7:30 PM PDT, Intuit Dome). Toronto’s road form over the past three games has been concerning, and the coaching staff will be looking to rediscover defensive intensity before the home games begin.

Maple Leafs Set for Bruins Tuesday; Stolarz Status Unclear, Matthews Out Indefinitely

Sports Desk • March 23, 2026

The Toronto Maple Leafs travel to Boston’s TD Garden on Tuesday evening for a nationally televised game against the Bruins, carrying a three-game losing skid and significant injury uncertainty between the pipes. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz, who was taken to hospital during Saturday’s warmups after a puck struck him in the throat, has returned to the team and was back at practice, though his availability for Tuesday remains day-to-day. Joseph Woll, who started back-to-back games over the weekend, would likely get the call if Stolarz is unable to play.

Captain Auston Matthews, who had knee surgery Thursday, is expected to miss several weeks. The Leafs’ playoff position — 29–29–13 — has become increasingly precarious, and the front office will face tough questions about the team’s direction if results do not improve.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Countdown: BMO Field Preparations Advance; GTA Hospitality Sector Gears Up

Sports Desk • March 2026

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now fewer than 100 days away, preparations at BMO Field in Toronto and across the GTA hospitality sector are intensifying. Canada will serve as one of three host nations for the expanded 48-team tournament, with Toronto hosting six group-stage matches and at least one knockout round game. The tournament begins June 11 and concludes with the final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on July 19. Canada’s national men’s team is set to play its Group C opener on June 12, generating immense local excitement.

Restaurant associations in Brampton and Mississauga noted that after Mississauga council’s March 11 approval of extended bar hours for World Cup matches, venues across the GTA are accelerating investment in outdoor screening infrastructure and expanded seating to meet expected surge demand from local football fans.

March 24, 1954: The “Yonge Street Subway” Opens — Toronto Becomes First Canadian City With a Subway

History Desk

On March 24, 1954, the Toronto Transit Commission officially opened Canada’s first subway line: a 7.4-kilometre stretch of what is now the Yonge–University line, running from Eglinton Avenue south to Union Station. The opening was met with enormous public enthusiasm, drawing massive crowds who lined up to ride the new transit system. The subway was celebrated as a symbol of Toronto’s post-war modernisation and growth. Over the following seven decades, the TTC’s subway network expanded to four lines serving much of the inner city and inner suburbs. Plans to extend the system further into Scarborough, Mississauga, and York Region are underway in 2026, more than 70 years after that inaugural journey on Yonge Street.

India Holds Fuel Prices Steady Despite Global Crude Surge; Election Code Delays Revision

India Desk • March 24, 2026

India’s government is holding petrol and diesel prices steady despite global crude oil trading near $88–99 per barrel as elections approach in five states. Petrol prices stand at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67 in Delhi, with Mumbai at ₹103.50 and ₹90.03 respectively. The Model Code of Conduct in force for West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and Puducherry restricts the government from announcing major economic measures until results are declared on May 4. Analysts at Nomura and ICICI Securities estimate oil marketing companies are absorbing losses of several hundred crore rupees daily at current crude levels.

India’s Ministry of Petroleum has confirmed strategic reserves covering several months’ demand and is diversifying procurement from the US, Norway, and Russia. LPG remains at ₹912.50 per domestic cylinder; a significant upward revision to fuel prices is widely expected in May once election constraints lift.

PM Modi Schedules 14 Campaign Rallies in West Bengal; Brigade Parade Ground Rally Draws Massive Crowd

India Desk • March 24, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address 14 public meetings across West Bengal over the next month as the BJP intensifies its campaign ahead of April’s two-phase assembly elections. The BJP’s statewide “Parivartan Yatra” culminated in a massive Modi rally at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground on March 14, where the Prime Minister announced infrastructure projects worth ₹18,680 crore and declared that change in Bengal’s government was “inevitable.” Actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty is scheduled to take part in 10 BJP campaign events.

The campaign schedule also includes rallies by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in South 24 Paraganas and senior ministers across multiple districts. The BJP’s campaign is built around themes of governance accountability, women’s safety, education sector corruption, and demographic security in border districts. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking at an Eid congregation shortly after, called Modi the “biggest infiltrator” and accused the BJP of trying to destabilise the state.

India Monitors Strait of Hormuz; PM Modi Reviews Energy Security with CCS

India Desk • March 22, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed India’s energy supply situation with the Cabinet Committee on Security, reaffirming the country’s position that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is essential for global energy security. India’s Indian Navy has been escorting tankers through the Gulf of Oman, and the government has maintained diplomatic contact with all parties to the conflict. Modi also conveyed India’s desire for a peaceful resolution in a call with Iranian President Pezeshkian, emphasising India’s “deep concern” over civilian casualties on both sides.

India imports roughly 85 per cent of its crude oil, and the Strait of Hormuz accounts for approximately 40 per cent of that supply. The IEA’s warning that the crisis exceeds the combined impact of the 1970s oil shocks has added urgency to India’s diplomatic outreach across the Gulf.

West Bengal Election Campaign: TMC Unveils 10-Point Manifesto; BJP Confident in Two-Phase Schedule

India Desk • March 20–22, 2026

West Bengal’s election campaign is gathering momentum as voting approaches on April 23 and 29, with results expected on May 4. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee unveiled the Trinamool Congress’s manifesto on March 20, headlined by a promise to launch a “Duare Chikitsa” (Doorstep Healthcare) programme across every polling booth, alongside pledges to modernise thousands of schools with e-learning facilities. Banerjee accused the BJP of trying to impose “undeclared President’s Rule” and vowed the TMC would win a fourth consecutive mandate.

The BJP, which released its first candidate list of 144 names on March 16 and a second list of 111 candidates on March 19, has drawn confidence from a large Modi rally in Kolkata covering 28 constituencies. An escalating dispute between the TMC and the Election Commission over the transfer of senior state officials — including the chief secretary and DGP — has added a contentious dimension to the campaign.

Rajya Sabha By-Elections Concluded; New Members Take Seats

India Desk • March 17, 2026

Elections for 37 seats in the Rajya Sabha were held on March 16, 2026, with results declared the same day. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured the majority of the contested seats, while several regional parties also returned members to the upper house. The new members add to a Rajya Sabha arithmetic that continues to constrain the passage of significant legislation without coalition agreement, as the NDA does not hold an outright majority in the upper chamber. Opposition parties, including the INDIA alliance, challenged several results but electoral officers confirmed the counts.

The newly elected members were formally sworn in on March 17, with the House briefly suspended after protests over the Election Commission’s handling of the West Bengal state election schedule dominated proceedings in the first hours of the new sitting.

India’s BRICS Presidency Tested as Tehran Seeks Condemnation of US–Israel Strikes

India Desk • March 24, 2026

India’s 2026 BRICS presidency is facing an early diplomatic stress test as Iran pushes member states to issue a collective condemnation of US and Israeli airstrikes. India has so far declined to join any such statement, walking a careful line between its strategic partnership with the United States and its historic ties with Iran and fellow BRICS members Russia and China. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh wrote that India was “boasting of being the President of BRICS+ in 2026, but has not summoned up the inclination or courage to put out a collective statement on the US-Israel air offensives.”

The situation is further complicated by the fact that Saudi Arabia and the UAE — both targets of Iranian attacks and fellow BRICS members — are deeply opposed to any condemnation of the anti-Iran coalition. New Delhi’s challenge is to maintain relationships with all sides while protecting its energy supply chains, which depend critically on both Gulf Arab states and Iran for crude oil and LNG access.

India’s Rupee Holds Near Record Low at ₹93.85; RBI Watch Intensifies

Business Desk • March 24, 2026

The Indian rupee held near its record low of ₹93.85 against the US dollar in early Tuesday trading, having hit an all-time low of ₹93.89 on Monday amid surging crude oil import costs and heavy foreign investor outflows. The currency has depreciated approximately 2.75 per cent against the dollar over the past four weeks since the Iran war began, with the current account deficit widening sharply as the oil import bill balloons. The Reserve Bank of India is believed to be intervening to smooth volatility without resisting the structural depreciation trend.

Economists noted that the five-day pause in US strikes on Iranian power plants, if it leads to a genuine diplomatic settlement, could provide the rupee significant relief. But Iran’s denial of any talks has kept the market cautious. India’s foreign exchange reserves stood at approximately $620 billion at the start of March, offering a reasonable buffer for intervention.

Petrol at ₹94.77, Diesel ₹87.67 in Delhi; State Election Freeze Delays Market Adjustment

Business Desk • March 24, 2026

Petrol prices in Delhi remain at ₹94.77 per litre and diesel at ₹87.67, with Mumbai at ₹103.50 and ₹90.03 respectively. The government has held prices steady as crude oil trades around $88–99 per barrel, with the divergence between international crude and domestic retail prices creating an implicit subsidy that analysts estimate is costing oil marketing companies several hundred crore rupees daily. LPG prices remain at ₹912.50 per domestic cylinder.

The model code of conduct for state elections in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry constrains the government from announcing major economic measures, including fuel price revisions, until the process concludes on May 4. A significant upward revision to petrol and diesel prices is widely anticipated in May.

Business Desk • March 24, 2026

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League begins Saturday, March 28, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. SRH confirmed that Sri Lanka pacer Eshan Malinga has received clearance from Sri Lanka Cricket to participate, while Matheesha Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga are still awaiting their No Objection Certificates.

The IPL, one of the world’s most valuable sports franchises and a significant driver of broadcasting revenue, is expected to generate tens of thousands of crore rupees in economic activity this season. The full schedule of 74 matches concludes with the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on June 3.

IPL 2026 Final Squads Set; RCB–SRH Opener Marks Start of 74-Match Season

Sports Desk • March 24, 2026

All ten IPL 2026 franchises have finalised their squads ahead of the season opener on Saturday, March 28. The BCCI’s captains’ and coaches’ meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in Mumbai to outline playing conditions and rule changes. Notable late developments include KKR confirming Saurabh Dubey as the replacement for injured Akash Deep, while Delhi Capitals are still awaiting word on Mitchell Starc’s clearance from Cricket Australia. Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant is expected to bat at number three in what could be a pivotal season for the wicketkeeper-batter.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed a refreshed Rohit Sharma to recapture his best T20 form for Mumbai Indians, having stepped back from Test and T20I cricket. Ashwin also questioned the captaincy selection at MI, suggesting Suryakumar Yadav would have been the stronger choice given his T20 World Cup heroics. The full schedule and broadcast details are available at iplt20.com.

MS Dhoni to Make IPL Return With CSK; Chinnaswamy ‘Roar ’26’ Event Draws Tens of Thousands

Sports Desk • March 23, 2026

MS Dhoni’s impending return with Chennai Super Kings for what is widely expected to be his final IPL season has generated exceptional public excitement. The CSK “Roar ’26” pre-season event in Chennai drew approximately 20,000 fans to Chepauk Stadium, where A.R. Rahman performed live and legends including Suresh Raina and Matthew Hayden were inducted into the CSK Hall of Fame alongside other club icons. Dhoni himself received a thunderous reception as he appeared on the field in yellow once more.

The event also featured a nostalgic reunion of former CSK stars, with the current squad practising in front of the massive crowd. CSK, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history with five titles, begin their campaign in the first week of April. Ticket demand for CSK’s Chepauk home games has already far outstripped supply.

India Women Badminton: Tanvi Sharma, Isharani Baruah in French Semifinal Exits

Sports Desk • March 22, 2026

India’s women’s singles hopes at the Orleans Masters Super 300 ended in the semifinals on Saturday, with 17-year-old Tanvi Sharma going down 9–21, 16–21 to Japan’s former world champion Nozomi Okuhara in 35 minutes, while 22-year-old Isharani Baruah lost 12–21, 21–23 to Thailand’s Pitchamon Opatniputh. Both players had impressed in their respective routes to the last four. The performances nonetheless highlighted the depth developing in Indian women’s singles, with the BWF World Championships in New Delhi later this year providing the next major stage.

Tanvi, in particular, had notably defeated Okuhara at the Syed Modi International last year, making the reverse result a minor upset. India’s men’s representation at the tournament had been stronger, reflecting the continuing strength of the men’s doubles pairs on the global circuit.

March 24, 1977: Emergency Ends — Indira Gandhi’s Congress Defeated at the Polls

History Desk

On March 24, 1977, the results of India’s general election were declared, marking the end of the Emergency period that Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had imposed on June 25, 1975, suspending civil liberties, press freedom, and political opposition for 21 months. The Janata Party coalition, united in opposition to the Emergency, won a decisive majority, defeating the Indian National Congress and marking the first time since independence that a non-Congress party formed the national government. The election result was widely celebrated as a triumph of Indian democracy. Indira Gandhi herself lost her seat in Rae Bareli. She returned to power in the 1980 general election. The Emergency remains one of the most contested episodes in post-independence Indian political history.

Trump Claims Iran Talks Are Under Way; Tehran Flatly Denies Any Dialogue on Day 25

Global Desk • March 24, 2026

The 25th day of the US–Israel war on Iran opened with sharply conflicting narratives about a possible diplomatic resolution. President Donald Trump announced in the early hours of Monday in a Truth Social post that he was postponing planned strikes on Iranian power plants for five days, citing “very good and productive conversations” that he said could lead to “a complete and total resolution” of the conflict. He claimed the two sides had reached “major points of agreement.”

Iran’s Foreign Ministry swiftly denied any dialogue with Washington, calling Trump’s claims an attempt to reduce energy prices and buy time for military preparations. However, a senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official told CBS News in an exclusive that Tehran had “received points from the US through mediators and they are being reviewed” — a significant, if cautious, acknowledgement of indirect contact. Israel meanwhile launched a “wide-scale wave of strikes” on infrastructure in Tehran on Monday, even as the diplomatic pause was announced. Stocks rallied globally on the five-day pause, but Iran’s continued denials kept markets on edge.

Iran Strikes Continue in Gulf; UAE Intercepts Seven Ballistic Missiles and 16 Drones in Single Day

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

Gulf states continued to absorb Iranian attacks even as diplomatic signals emerged Monday. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported intercepting seven ballistic missiles and 16 drones launched from Iran in a single day, with one Indian national sustaining minor injuries from falling debris in Abu Dhabi’s Al-Shawamekh area. Since the war began, the UAE has intercepted 352 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,789 drones, according to data compiled by the Alma Research and Education Center. An IRGC spokesperson stated Iran had attacked the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and a Saudi Arabian military base in the north using missiles and drones.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Muscat, Oman, issued a shelter-in-place advisory for all of Oman, warning residents to stock food, water, and medication. Seven people were also killed in a Qatari helicopter crash in territorial waters linked to “routine duty” technical failure. At least 60 people have been killed in Iraq since the conflict began, according to Iraqi authorities.

Human Toll Mounts: Over 1,500 Dead in Iran, 1,039 in Lebanon, 18 Civilians Killed in Israel

Global Desk • March 23–24, 2026

The human cost of the conflict continues to rise across multiple fronts. Iran’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the country’s death toll has surpassed 1,500, with rights group HRANA reporting at least 1,047 civilian deaths including 214 children. The US-based organisation also listed 657 additional fatalities as “unclassified.” In Lebanon, Israeli strikes since March 2 have killed at least 1,039 people including 118 children, according to Lebanese health authorities. In Israel, 18 civilians have been killed by Iranian attacks and more than 4,713 have been injured, with approximately 5,000 displaced from their homes.

The IDF reported killing two Iranian nuclear scientists in recent days. Netanyahu said Israel “can leverage the significant achievements we have made with the US military in order to achieve the war’s objectives through an agreement.” He added, however, that Israel would “safeguard our vital interests under any circumstances,” signalling continued offensive operations.

Iran Denies Trump’s Peace Claims; Threatens ‘Special Plans’ for Tel Aviv and US Allies

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

While the five-day pause in US strikes on Iranian power plants sparked a global markets rally, Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency reported on Monday that Tehran was preparing “special plans” for Tel Aviv and unnamed US regional allies, citing what it described as informed sources within the security apparatus. A military spokesperson said Iran has “full control” over the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, and waters off Oman, adding that the country does not need to lay mines to assert its position. Senior military adviser Mohsen Rezaei said the war would continue until Tehran receives full compensation for damage sustained.

Iran’s possible interlocutor in the claimed US talks is believed by multiple outlets to be Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of the Iranian Majlis. Iranian authorities arrested 68 alleged spies accused of monitoring US–Israeli strike sites and transmitting footage to “hostile media.”

UK’s Starmer Calls Emergency Meeting as Economic Fallout from Iran War Deepens

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer convened an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday to address the escalating economic fallout from the Iran war, which has driven energy costs to levels not seen since at least the 1970s. Starmer, who earlier spoke with President Trump to press for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, said the UK government was working on a package of support measures for households and businesses facing rising energy bills. The Bank of England has left its key interest rate on hold at 3.75 per cent but warned that a prolonged energy shock would likely drive up inflation and could necessitate further tightening.

Across Europe, Germany’s DAX closed down 4.55 per cent last week and France’s CAC 40 retreated over three per cent, reflecting acute vulnerability to gas supply disruptions. The ECB raised its 2026 inflation forecast to 2.6 per cent, up from 1.9 per cent in December, citing higher energy prices as the primary driver.

Netanyahu: Israel Will ‘Safeguard Vital Interests Under Any Circumstances’ as Ceasefire Signals Emerge

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck a dual note on Monday, suggesting Israel could leverage its military gains to achieve the war’s objectives through a negotiated agreement, while simultaneously insisting that military operations would continue. Speaking publicly after a call with Trump, Netanyahu said the president “believes there is an opportunity to turn major military gains into an agreement.” He also revealed that the IDF had killed two more Iranian nuclear scientists in recent days, saying “more actions are expected.”

Israel’s defence minister separately confirmed that US and Israeli strikes on Iran would “increase significantly” this week, indicating that the diplomatic pause announced by Trump does not necessarily presage a military stand-down on the Israeli side. Netanyahu’s comments have deepened uncertainty in world capitals over whether the five-day window will lead to a genuine ceasefire or simply to further escalation.

Economy & Business
Global equities rallied sharply on Trump’s five-day pause, with Nikkei up 0.9%, Hang Seng +1.4%, and US futures up over 1%. WTI crude plunged 11%. Gold retreated ~2.4%. The IEA warned this crisis is worse than the 1970s oil shocks combined — the Strait of Hormuz must reopen for meaningful relief.

IEA Chief: Iran War Energy Crisis Worse Than 1970s Oil Shocks Combined

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol delivered an extraordinarily stark assessment of the global energy situation on Monday, telling Australia’s National Press Club in Canberra that the crisis caused by the Iran war is worse than the two oil shocks of the 1970s and the Ukraine war’s gas disruption — combined. “No country will be immune to the effects of this crisis if it continues to go in this direction,” Birol said. He noted that 40 energy facilities across nine countries have been severely damaged, and that roughly 140 billion cubic metres of gas have been lost — nearly double the disruption caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The IEA has released 400 million barrels of oil from emergency stockpiles — the largest coordinated release in the organisation’s history — but Birol warned that “the single most important solution to this problem is opening up the Hormuz Strait as things stand now.” The agency has also called on governments worldwide to reduce energy demand through remote work, lower speed limits, and reduced non-essential air travel.

Global Markets Rally on Trump Pause; Analysts Warn Fragility Remains

Global Desk • March 23–24, 2026

World equity markets surged on Monday and into Tuesday’s Asian session after President Trump announced a five-day pause in planned strikes on Iranian power plants. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.91 per cent to 46,447, the S&P 500 gained 1.66 per cent to 6,614, and the Nasdaq added 1.81 per cent. In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 0.9 per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 1.4 per cent in early Tuesday trading. Oil prices fell sharply, with WTI crude dropping more than 11 per cent to around $87–88 per barrel, the largest single-session decline in weeks.

However, analysts at multiple banks cautioned that the rally was fragile, noting that Iran’s denial of any talks and Netanyahu’s statement that military operations would increase underscored the continued risk of re-escalation. S&P Global noted that its March 2026 economic outlook had already lowered 2026 global growth forecasts and raised inflation forecasts substantially, and that a return to elevated oil prices could quickly reverse any market recovery.

Asia Turns to Coal to Manage LNG Shortage; IEA Warns of Environmental ‘Silver Lining’

Global Desk • March 23, 2026

Asian countries are ramping up coal consumption to manage energy shortages caused by the Hormuz disruption, with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and several Southeast Asian nations reporting sharp increases in coal-fired generation. More than 80 per cent of the crude oil and LNG passing through the Strait of Hormuz is destined for Asian markets. Qatar, a major LNG supplier, has cut export capacity by 17 per cent and warned of force majeure on some long-term contracts for up to five years, triggering emergency procurement across the continent.

The IEA’s Birol noted an environmental paradox: while short-term coal use raises emissions, the crisis may accelerate policy support for renewables and energy security investment in Asia, potentially “pushing policymakers to embrace renewables more quickly.” New Zealand announced $50-per-week fuel subsidies for low-to-middle income families and Sri Lanka declared four-day government work weeks to conserve energy.

Sinner Dominates Miami Open; Alcaraz Felled by Injury

Global Desk • March 2026

World number one Jannik Sinner of Italy continued his dominant form on the ATP Tour at the Miami Open, advancing to the quarterfinals without dropping a set. Carlos Alcaraz, his principal rival for the world number one ranking, withdrew from the tournament with a thigh strain before his scheduled third-round match, opening the draw considerably. Sinner is targeting back-to-back Miami titles, having won his first Masters 1000 trophy on hard courts last year. American hopes are being carried by Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, both of whom remain in the draw as the tournament enters its second week.

In the WTA draw, world number one Iga Swiatek of Poland is also progressing strongly at Hard Rock Stadium. The Miami Open continues through the finals weekend on March 29–30, with the event serving as one of the final ATP and WTA ranking events before the clay court season begins.

FIFA World Cup Preparations: Canada Countdown Under 100 Days

Global Desk • March 2026

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico, is now fewer than 100 days away, with all stadiums and host cities finalising operational readiness plans. The tournament uses an expanded 48-team format for the first time in its history, and will feature three group-stage games daily throughout a substantially extended tournament. Canada will host matches at BMO Field in Toronto, Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, and BC Place in Vancouver, with the host nation’s national team included in Group C.

Global fan travel demand is exceptionally high despite the elevated cost environment driven by the Iran war’s fuel price impacts. FIFA has implemented contingency ticketing and transportation support measures to assist fans dealing with higher airfare and fuel costs. The final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey.

PSL 2026: Armed Group Threatens Foreign Players; David Warner and Steve Smith Under Security Review

Global Desk • March 2026

Security concerns have emerged around Pakistan’s Pakistan Super League as an armed group issued threats targeting foreign players including Australian veterans David Warner and Steve Smith, according to reports in DNA India. The PSL organising authority and PCB said they were taking the threats seriously and were in contact with law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The threats have already prompted several international players to withdraw from the tournament in recent weeks, citing security concerns.

The situation has complicated the PCB’s efforts to maintain the PSL’s profile as a leading global T20 tournament. Several Sri Lankan players, including Dasun Shanaka, withdrew from the PSL to take up IPL 2026 contracts, with the PCB indicating it would “take action” against those who opted out. Cricket authorities in multiple countries have issued travel advisories.

March 24, 1603: King James VI of Scotland Becomes James I of England, Uniting the Crowns

History Desk

On March 24, 1603, Queen Elizabeth I of England died at Richmond Palace without a designated heir. The crown passed to King James VI of Scotland, who became James I of England, uniting the English and Scottish crowns in a personal union under the House of Stuart. The event marked the beginning of the end of the Tudor dynasty and the start of a new era in British history, with profound implications for the future of the island, including the eventual Acts of Union that formally created the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and great-great-grandson of Henry VII, making him the closest living heir to the English throne.
