Canadian Troops Test Ground Drones in Latvia as NATO Exercises Backdrop a Political Crisis

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Canadian and Latvian troops are conducting battlefield trials of remotely piloted ground vehicles for the first time as part of Crystal Arrow 2026, a major NATO exercise underway in Latvia until May 15. The drill involves approximately 2,500 troops and 500 pieces of equipment, with former Ukrainian military officers serving as instructors — a reversal of the traditional training dynamic reflecting how much Ukrainian forces have advanced in drone warfare. Systems tested range from small four-wheeled reconnaissance vehicles to larger platform models drawn from Latvian, Ukrainian, and multinational fleets. The Latvian Brigade is leading the exercise alongside the Canadian-led multinational brigade.

The exercise is unfolding against a fraught backdrop: just days before it began, a pair of drones originally launched from Ukraine struck an oil storage facility in eastern Latvia’s Rezekne district after being redirected through Russian electronic warfare, damaging four fuel tanks without causing injuries. Latvia’s defence minister was subsequently dismissed by Prime Minister Evika Silina for what she described as an inadequate air defence response. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia had deliberately diverted the drones. Canadian Forces participants acknowledged NATO is still adapting its command structures to integrate drone technology at the pace modern warfare demands, with one sergeant noting, “We’re behind the times.”

New Brunswick Elects New Mayors in Fredericton and Moncton in First Full Municipal Vote Since 2023 Reforms

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

New Brunswick held province-wide local government elections on Monday, with voters choosing representatives for almost all 77 municipalities and 12 rural districts for the first time since local government boundaries were restructured in 2023. In Fredericton, city councillor Steve Hicks defeated former federal MP Jenica Atwin to become the city’s next mayor, bringing a largely new council with him. In Moncton, three-term councillor Shawn Crossman edged out Brian Murphy after a night of back-and-forth results, while in Saint John, incumbent Donna Reardon was re-elected to a second term, defeating challengers Blaine Harris and Barry Ogden.

More than 1,200 candidates contested races across the province, including mayoral, council, rural district advisory committee, and district education council seats. Voter turnout varied significantly by municipality, with some communities exceeding 46 per cent while others fell well below 20 per cent. Several municipalities returned entire councils by acclamation, including Hartland and McAdam. The elections were the third time New Brunswickers had gone to the polls recently, following the 2024 provincial vote and the 2025 federal election.

Census Day Arrives: Canadians Have Until May 12 to Complete Mandatory 2026 Questionnaire

The Chronicler Canada Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Tuesday marked the official reference date for the 2026 Canadian Census of Population, with Statistics Canada urging households that had not yet completed their questionnaires to do so. Collection began on May 4 when invitation letters bearing unique 16-digit access codes were mailed to households nationwide; remote and northern communities were enumerated beginning in February. The census is mandatory under the Statistics Act, and refusal to complete it can result in a fine of up to $500. The 2026 Census of Agriculture is being conducted simultaneously, requiring all farm operators to file.

This is Canada’s 24th national census and the first to include questions about sexual orientation for respondents aged 15 and over, alongside new questions on homelessness and self-reported health conditions in the long-form questionnaire. Data collected will be used by all levels of government to plan schools, hospitals, housing, transportation, and social services. Statistics Canada has indicated all major releases are expected approximately 18 months from Census Day, placing first results in late 2027. The previous census in 2021 recorded a national population of 36,991,981.

Ontario’s Police Watchdog to Investigate Conduct of Toronto Drug Squad Members

The Chronicler GTA Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Ontario’s Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) has announced it will investigate allegations of potential misconduct involving an unspecified number of members of the Toronto Police Service’s Drug Squad. The provincial oversight body confirmed the probe on Monday, though it did not disclose the number of officers under review, the specific nature of the allegations, or the precise period covered by the investigation. The Drug Squad operates within the Toronto Police Service’s organised crime enforcement framework.

LECA is Ontario’s independent civilian oversight agency with the authority to investigate complaints and incidents involving police conduct across the province. The announcement follows a period of heightened public scrutiny of specialised policing units in Ontario. No charges have been announced in connection with the investigation, and the agency has not indicated a timeline for the completion of its review.

Government Assures No Fuel Shortage Despite West Asia Crisis, Cites Stable Inventories and LPG Supply

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas moved to reassure citizens on Monday that petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies across India remain uninterrupted, one day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the public to reduce fuel consumption amid the ongoing West Asia crisis. Sujata Sharma, joint secretary for marketing and oil refinery at the ministry, told reporters that crude inventories had been maintained and refineries were operating at optimum levels. “There is no dry-out at any retail outlet. No dry-out has been reported at LPG distributorships either,” she said.

Sharma shared detailed supply figures, stating that in the preceding three days, cylinders had been delivered to 1.26 crore households against 1.14 crore bookings, and more than 17,000 tonnes of commercial LPG had been sold. She said enforcement actions were ongoing, with approximately 1,500 raids and inspections carried out, penalties imposed on 382 distributors, and 76 distributors suspended for violations. The official also echoed the Prime Minister’s call for gradual substitution of conventional fuels with electric vehicles, public transport, and carpooling wherever feasible.

Modi’s Appeal to Pause Gold Buying Raises Questions About India’s Fiscal Position as West Asia War Presses the Rupee

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public appeal asking Indians to refrain from purchasing gold for a year has triggered significant debate among economists and market participants about the underlying health of India’s economy. Modi made the remarks at an event in Telangana, where he also urged reduced fuel consumption, a revival of work-from-home arrangements, and restraint on overseas travel — a combination that many analysts interpreted as signalling acute concern about external pressure on India’s balance of payments. Jewellery stocks including Kalyan Jewellers, Titan, and Senco fell by as much as 12 per cent following the remarks.

Analysts cited the structural vulnerability that makes physical gold politically sensitive at moments of geopolitical stress: India imports most of its gold in US dollars, and in the 2025–26 financial year the country’s gold import bill reportedly reached approximately $72 billion — nearly 10 per cent of total imports. With crude oil prices elevated due to the West Asia conflict pushing India’s oil import bill toward $134.7 billion, the combined drain on foreign exchange reserves creates pressure on the rupee. Nomura described the appeal as a signal that fiscal stress had reached a tipping point. Experts were careful to note that no ban or restriction on gold purchases has been announced; the remarks constituted an economic appeal, not a legal directive.

NITI Aayog Recommends Two-Year Halt on All Major Government Construction as West Asia Crisis Disrupts Supply Chains

The Chronicler India Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Government think tank NITI Aayog has advised the Union government to suspend all major construction activity across India for two years, citing cost escalation, rising imports, and supply chain disruptions from the West Asia crisis, according to highly placed sources cited by The Tribune. The recommendation covers a wide range of infrastructure projects, including the planned demolition and reconstruction of three ministerial complexes in New Delhi: Nirman Bhavan, which houses the Urban Affairs and Health Ministries; Udyog Bhavan, home to the MSME, Steel, and Commerce Ministries; and Shastri Bhavan, which accommodates the largest number of Union ministries. Sources said demolition work already underway at Nirman Bhavan has been halted, while preparatory barricading at Udyog Bhavan may also now pause.

The think tank’s recommendation, made prior to the appointment of its new Vice-Chairman Ashok Lahiri and a newly constituted team of members, cited the fact that large-scale construction consumes high quantities of fuel and heavy-duty machinery, both of which have become more expensive since Strait of Hormuz disruptions began restricting global energy shipments. The recommendation aligns with the broader austerity posture signalled by Prime Minister Modi on May 10, when he publicly called for reduced fuel use, a gold-buying pause, and a return to work-from-home — a pattern analysts have read as evidence the government is preparing for a prolonged period of external economic stress.

Gaza Ceasefire Tracker: Israel Has Attacked Gaza on 190 of 214 Days Since October Truce, Killing at Least 854

The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Israel has violated the Gaza ceasefire agreement at least 2,400 times since it took effect on October 10, 2025, according to the Government Media Office in Gaza, tracking violations through April 14, 2026. An Al Jazeera analysis found that Israel attacked Gaza on 190 of the 214 days since the ceasefire began, leaving only 24 days during which no violent incidents, deaths, or injuries were recorded. Since October 10, Israeli attacks have killed at least 854 Palestinians and injured 2,453, per the Palestinian Ministry of Health. The two deadliest single days were October 19 and October 29, when a combined 154 people were killed. The overall death toll from October 7, 2023 through May 11, 2026 has reached at least 72,740, including 20,179 children, with 172,555 injured.

The ceasefire, brokered through Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediation and signed at a 30-nation ceremony in Egypt on October 13, required Israel to lift the blockade of aid, withdraw forces to a designated yellow line, and release Palestinian prisoners. Hamas fulfilled its obligations, releasing all 20 living Israeli captives and returning 28 bodies by December 26. However, aid delivery remains severely restricted: between October 10 and February 14, only 41,714 trucks entered Gaza out of 110,400 allocated — 37 per cent of the target. Essential nutritious food items including meat, dairy, and vegetables remain blocked. The United States has maintained that the ceasefire is still holding despite the ongoing attacks.

Starmer Refuses to Resign as Cabinet Meets; Junior Minister Quits and Labour Revolt Reaches Critical Mass

The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer told his Cabinet on Tuesday that he has no intention of resigning, even as pressure within his own Labour Party reached a new peak. More than 70 Labour backbenchers — representing nearly a fifth of the parliamentary party — had called for Starmer to step down or set out a timetable for his departure following the party’s dismal performance in local council elections last week, in which Labour lost control of more than 30 councils across England. The most senior voice to call for his exit was Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood. On Tuesday, junior minister Miatta Fahnbulleh, who served in the housing and communities department, resigned, stating that the government had not governed with “vision, pace or the mandate for change” given by voters.

UK government borrowing costs surged to their highest level since 2008 on Tuesday morning, reflecting market anxiety over the political instability. Starmer’s office insisted the Labour Party’s leadership challenge process had not been triggered, and that the government would continue governing. The Eurasia Group raised the probability of Starmer being removed from office this year to 80 per cent, estimating a 35 per cent chance that MPs would force a leadership election by September. The crisis comes despite Labour having won a landslide election victory in July 2024, with the party’s collapse in support attributed to policy missteps, a weak economic record, a perceived absence of governing vision, and voter backlash over welfare spending cuts.

U.S. Sanctions Chinese Firms Over Iranian Oil as Trump Heads to Beijing Seeking Xi’s Help to End the War

The Chronicler World Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

The U.S. Treasury Department on Monday announced new sanctions targeting Chinese purchases of Iranian oil, hours before President Donald Trump departed for a high-stakes summit in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for May 13–15. The measures targeted 12 individuals and entities across Iran, Hong Kong, the UAE, and Oman, focusing on the IRGC’s use of front companies to disguise oil sales. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent framed the move as part of “Operation Economic Fury.” Trump, who described Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal — which called for war reparations and U.S. recognition of Tehran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz — as “garbage,” has said the tenuous April 8 ceasefire is “on life support.”

The Trump–Xi summit, the first visit to China by a U.S. president in nearly nine years, is expected to cover trade, a critical minerals deal, Taiwan, and artificial intelligence risks. The Iran war looms over the agenda: China has rebuffed U.S. requests to use its leverage with Tehran to end the conflict, and has instructed domestic oil refineries to continue processing Iranian crude in defiance of American sanctions. Both leaders have strong incentives to end the fighting — Trump faces declining approval ratings over fuel prices, while China has been drawing down oil reserves set aside for a potential Taiwan conflict to compensate for reduced Iranian supply. U.S. officials said Trump will press Xi directly on China’s financial support for Iran and possible weapons exports to the regime.

Thunder Sweep Lakers to Reach West Finals; Cavs’ Mitchell Ties Playoff Scoring Record in Half

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

The Oklahoma City Thunder advanced to the Western Conference Finals on Monday night, completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers with a 115–110 victory in Game 4. The Thunder, defending NBA champions, won the first three games comfortably but faced a sterner test in the finale, with the Lakers leading in the fourth quarter before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — who finished with 35 points — led the comeback. Ajay Mitchell added 28 points and Chet Holmgren 16. The Lakers committed 19 turnovers, translating to a 22–9 advantage for Oklahoma City in points off giveaways. LeBron James finished his season with 24 points and 12 rebounds. The Thunder’s 8–0 postseason record ties the 1950 Minneapolis Lakers for the longest winning streak by a defending champion to open a playoff run.

In the night’s other game, Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell erupted for 43 points — 39 in the second half alone, tying Eric “Sleepy” Floyd’s record for the most points in a playoff half in NBA history — to lead the Cavaliers to a 112–103 win over the Detroit Pistons, levelling their Eastern Conference Semifinals series at 2–2. The New York Knicks also completed a sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers to advance to a second consecutive Eastern Conference Finals, with Miles McBride scoring 25 points on 7-of-9 three-point shooting in Game 4. In the NBA draft lottery, the Washington Wizards won the right to select first overall on June 23.

Gauff Saves Match Point to Reach Rome Quarterfinals, Sets Up Andreeva Showdown

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

World No. 3 Coco Gauff produced one of the clutch recoveries of her season on Monday at the Italian Open in Rome, saving a match point before defeating 18-year-old compatriot Iva Jovic 5–7, 7–5, 6–2 in two hours and 45 minutes to reach the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 event. Jovic had Gauff on the brink of elimination, serving for the match at 5–3 in the second set and reaching 40–30, before the American clawed back through three deuces. Gauff subsequently dominated the decider, winning the last four games in a row. “Honestly on that match point my head was almost to the locker room, to be honest,” Gauff said afterward. “Then after, I don’t know, I was able to get through it.”

The victory — Gauff’s tenth three-set win on the WTA Tour in 2026 — set up a quarterfinal against No. 8 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia, who beat Elise Mertens 6–3, 6–3. Gauff holds a 4–0 career record against Andreeva, including three wins on clay. Elsewhere in Monday’s round of 16, No. 4 seed Iga Swiatek dispatched Naomi Osaka 6–2, 6–1, Elena Rybakina beat Karolina Pliskova 6–0, 6–2 in 58 minutes, and Elina Svitolina advanced in straight sets, setting up a quarterfinal between two former Rome champions.

Southampton Face Middlesbrough Tonight in Charged Playoff Second Leg Amid EFL Spying Charge

The Chronicler Sport Desk · Tuesday, May 12, 2026

Southampton host Middlesbrough on Tuesday evening at St Mary’s Stadium in the second leg of their Championship playoff semi-final, with a place at Wembley and Premier League promotion on the line. The tie is level at 0–0 after last Saturday’s goalless first leg at the Riverside Stadium, where Middlesbrough created the better chances but failed to convert. The match has been heavily overshadowed by what commentators have dubbed “Spygate 2.0”: the English Football League has charged Southampton with a breach of regulations after a member of their staff was allegedly caught filming Middlesbrough’s training session at Rockliffe Park ahead of the first leg. Southampton have reportedly accepted the charge, which will be referred to an independent disciplinary commission.

Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg publicly accused Southampton of “cheating” and walked out of his post-match press conference when questions on the subject persisted, and has since refused a pre-match press conference for the second leg. Southampton enter as favourites, having gone 20 matches unbeaten in the Championship — including 14 wins — since January, under manager Tonda Eckert. A Southampton win or draw advances them to the final; only a Middlesbrough victory sends it to extra time and potentially penalties. Kick-off is at 8:00 PM UK time.
